Tile spacers: U-shape or multi-spacer?

If you want to lay tiles neatly, you need tile spacers. They help you keep the joint width even, stop tiles from sliding in the fresh adhesive and give you a uniform joint pattern. Two designs are especially practical: the U-shaped spacer and the multi-spacer. Here you will learn how they differ and which one suits your project.

Go straight to our spacers:

Why tile spacers matter

Joints are not just about looks. They compensate for small dimensional tolerances between tiles. Spacers help you

  • keep the same joint width everywhere,
  • line tiles up neatly,
  • prevent tiles from sliding while you lay them.

Without spacers, joints quickly become uneven, and that shows immediately on the finished surface.

U-shaped tile spacers

U-shaped spacers are pushed into the joint from the side instead of being placed under or between the tiles. That way they barely touch the adhesive and are easy to pull out after laying.

Advantages

  • easy to insert and remove
  • good for edges, corners and junctions
  • helpful for horizontal and vertical alignment on walls

Typical use

  • wall tiles
  • wall and floor tiles indoors and outdoors
  • layouts with many junctions and cut edges

Our Nivilli Spacer is designed for joint widths of 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm.

Multi-spacer: several joint widths in one piece

A multi-spacer has several steps of different thickness. You simply turn it to the right side, so one spacer covers several joint widths.

Advantages

  • several joint widths in one tool
  • for wall and floor tiles as well as natural stone
  • sturdy, easy to clean and reusable
  • handy when different joints are needed on the same job

The Nivilli Multi-Spacer 4in1 covers 1 mm, 1.5 mm, 2 mm and 3 mm. For other joint widths it can be combined with a second multi-spacer.

Tips for use

  • Insert spacers while the adhesive is fresh and do not press them deep into the adhesive bed.
  • Remove spacers before grouting and do not let them set in the adhesive.
  • The right joint width depends on the tile format, the dimensional tolerance of the tile and the grout manufacturer's instructions.
  • With large-format tiles, a tile leveling system also helps to avoid lippage.

Frequently asked questions

What joint width is common for wall tiles?

For indoor wall tiles, narrow joints of about 1.5 to 3 mm are common. What matters is the tile format and the instructions of the tile and grout manufacturers.

Can I reuse tile spacers?

The multi-spacer is explicitly designed to be reused. The U-shaped spacer made of sturdy plastic can usually be used several times as well. Clean briefly after pulling it out.

Do I need spacers if I use a leveling system?

With the Nivilli Spinny, the leveling tab already sets the joint width; tabs are available for 1 to 5 mm. Where there is no tab, for example at edges, corners and wall junctions, spacers keep the joint even.

Conclusion

For walls and junctions, the U-shaped spacer is the simplest solution. If you want to stay flexible and cover several joint widths with one piece, choose the multi-spacer. Both come in packs of 100: the Nivilli Spacer and the Nivilli Multi-Spacer 4in1.
